What is Profile & Home Folder in Windows Server 2012 by NetworkingGeeks

A Profile is a User State Environment that contains personal settings of user like:

  • Documents
  • Desktop Settings
  • Start Menu Icons
  • Shortcuts
  • Application Data
  • Downloads
  • Pictures
  • Musics
  • Videos
  • Contacts
  • Favorites

Profile is very important part part of this discussion. In order to manage activity of user that is there in network, we need to use Profile concept. A profile is basically used to store user activity on a dedicated location so that can restored or backup. In these situation System administrator has responsibility to create Profile for users to store important data. It is important when the user or administrator wants to restore important information. Excepts Local Drive Every things comes under Profile.

In general there are three types of profiles that we are using. they are as follows:

  • Local Profile
  • Roaming Profile
  • Mandatory Profile
Local Profile: A local Profile is created in the very first time when you log on to your computer and is stored on a computer local hard disk. Any Changes that you made to your local user profile are specific to the computer on which you made the changes.

Location of local profile
In windows server 2012, 2008, windows 8, windows 7, windows vista
In windows server 2003, 2000, NT, XP, 2000 professional

Roaming Profile: A Roaming Profile is Created by your system Administrator and stored on a server. This profile is available every time when you log on to any computer on the network. Any changes made to your roaming user profile are updated on the server.
Roaming profile is very useful in case of restoring data and creating backup for user. Administrator can do backup or restore task by sitting on their own location easily.

HOME FOLDER is a Centralized Location of the user file or data. Home Folder make it easier for an administrator to back up user files by collecting all user's file in one location. When ever the users log on to any computer in a domain, HOME FOLDER will be available in the form of networking Drive/ Network Location.
